What We Learnt - Target Group - Group Discussions
- Activities vary, walking was most popular (30%) but gym, yoga, golf, cycling and swimming were popular. Bowling, gardening and squash were also mentioned.
- 57% of participants complete exercise weekly, 35% daily.
- 51% of activities are undertaken locally (in local environment not part of a club). 27% are club based
- Weather is the biggest deterrent with 32% missing exercise due to weather. Safety and injury were the top considerations for deciding what to do. Cost and where to go were also important considerations.
- 73% of participants like when activities are organised.
- 85% of participants owned a smart phone and we noted this higher in this 60-early 70 age group versus mid 70's and over.

- Lack of adequate facilities, danger and the weather are main deterrents to exercising.
- 33% of those researched stated that there are few opportunities for older people in their local area to exercise or be physically active
- Only 40% of older people are members of sports or social club
- More facilities, special sessions for older people and better links to local clus identified as important to encourage participation

- Find it difficult to find clubs, activities to engage with.
- Can feel intimidated and worry about not being at the right level to participate
- They worry about injury and lack awareness of some of the health benefits
- Like local solutions and interaction is valued
- Cost is a factor for them
- Large majority 80% have smart phones
- Preference to participate and get involved but feel its not accessible or even exists for older people
